Flu vaccination can reduce your chance of getting flu and lower the risk of serious complications and hospitalization. Protection varies each season. Vaccinated people can still get flu, but vaccination may make illness less severe.
A flu shot during pregnancy can help protect both the pregnant person and their baby during the first months after birth, when babies are too young for their own flu vaccine.
CDC recommends flu vaccination each year for most people ages 6 months and older, with rare exceptions. Protection takes about two weeks to develop. Some children need two doses; ask their healthcare provider.
Common side effects include a sore arm, tiredness or muscle aches and are usually mild and short-lived. A flu shot cannot give you flu. Serious reactions are rare. Tell your provider about previous vaccine reactions and discuss which vaccine is appropriate for you.
