WIC for growing families

Find food, nutrition guidance and support for pregnancy and early childhood.

What WIC offers

Healthy starts, close to home.

The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) provides healthy foods, breastfeeding support, nutrition education, and referrals to healthcare and community services.

Who may qualify?

People who are pregnant, up to six months after pregnancy, or breastfeeding up to one year after pregnancy; infants and children under five. Applicants must live in North Carolina and meet income and nutrition requirements. Medicaid, Food and Nutrition Services (SNAP), or Work First participation meets the income requirement, but a WIC clinic still completes the eligibility assessment.

What should I bring?

Ask your local clinic what to bring. The state lists identification for each applicant, proof of North Carolina residence, and household income information. People receiving Medicaid, FNS or Work First do not need extra income documents.

How to get started

  1. Find a local clinic. Use the official WIC County Directory ↗, or call 1-844-601-6881.
  2. Schedule an appointment or send a referral. You can also complete the state WIC referral form ↗ so a clinic can contact you.
  3. Meet with the clinic. A WIC professional will review eligibility and discuss your family’s nutrition and health needs.

Sending the referral form begins the process; it does not approve benefits. Contact the clinic if you need help or have questions about an appointment.
